THE CHALLENGE OF FLASHOVERS IN HIGH VOLTAGE INSULATORS

Harsh environmental areas and high pollution conditions such as salt spray, industrial pollutants and even desert sand will lead to costly power interruptions due to excessive leakage current.

A high voltage insulator with contaminated surface will lead to pollution induced flashovers. 

Such a power interruption, in the best cases will mean economic damages due to the interruption in the electricity supply and in the worst cases, it will end up on electrical accidents, damaging significantly expensive equipment or even accidents which involve humans. 

Preventive methods such as live line washing, or applications of silicone greases have shown its short-term performance. Neither of these methods provides the long-term protection expected by the modern utility maintenance engineer.

HOW DOES MIDSUN HVIC ELIMINATES FLASHOVERS?
 

To prevent facilities from the flashover consequences and to deliver the performance required by utility engineers, MIDSUN HVIC ("High Voltage Insulators Coating") was developed as a one-part RTV silicone coating with various formulations. The coating is being used by major electrical utilities in the world, with a proved solid track when it comes to flashover protection in harsh polluted regions.

MIDSUN HVIC is constantly tested globally by many high voltage laboratories following the required international standards, the product has shown outstanding results when it comes to resisting corona, tracking and erosion, adherence, hydrophobicity recovery, among others.

Surface pre-treatment

The insulator surface to be coated should be clean and free of dust and grease. For cleaning the following operations are suggested:

  • Proper cleaning by using water and a suitable detergent might be sufficient.

  • Insulators that show an adhering pollution, such like cement, other mineral or chemical pollution layers should be cleaned by either "cob corn-" or carbon dioxide blasting.

  • Any type of grease or fatty pollution is to be removed by using a suitable solvent like benzine or turpentine. Residual contaminants should be removed by thoroughly wiping.

  • Finish the cleaning just before spraying MIDSUN HVIC with Isopropanol or an equivalent alcohol.

  • Proper stirring is recommended before the material is used.

 

Coating Application

MIDSUN HVIC is preferably applied by spraying. It can be applied by brushing or dipping as well. When airless spray pump is used, the following equipment settings are suitable: Flat nozzle of 0,33 mm, 20°, Setting of pressure output 50 - 150 bar.

Usually two or three coats is sufficient to obtain the recommended minimum thickness of 380 microns. 

Each coat can be applied as soon as the previous coat becomes tacky (not entirely dry!). This can be anywhere up to 30 minutes, depending on the ambient temperature and humidity. The full curing time is approximately 1 hour.

Rain can damage the coating. In case of rain, please protect the job site or stop application.

Solvent: Mineral Spirits.

Midsun HVIC w/Quartz Silica – Naptha

Midsun HVIC w/Quartz Silica is part of Midsun HVIC RTV Coatings. This specific formulation contains Quartz Silica as a filler. Midsun HVIC w/Quartz Silica is a one-part room temperature vulcanising (RTV) silicone coating providing long term, maintenance free, flashover protection of high voltage insulators in polluted environments, with high resistance to corona, ultraviolet light, water erosion, atmospheric and chemical degradation. Solvent: Naphta.

Midsun HVIC w/ATH- grey

Midsun HVIC G W/ATH is part of Midsun HVIC RTV Coatings. This specific formulation contains Alumina trihydrate (ATH) as a filler. Midsun HVIC G W/ATH is a one-part room temperature vulcanising (RTV) silicone coating providing long term, maintenance free, flashover protection of high voltage insulators in polluted environments, with high resistance to corona, ultraviolet light, water erosion, atmospheric and chemical degradation. Solvent: Mineral Spirits.

Midsun HVIC Solventless VOC- grey

Midsun HVIC Solventless VOC is part of Midsun HVIC RTV Coatings. This specific formulation has no solvent added. Midsun HVIC Solventless VOC is a one-part room temperature vulcanising (RTV) silicone coating providing long term, maintenance free, flashover protection of high voltage insulators in polluted environments, with high resistance to corona, ultraviolet light, water erosion, atmospheric and chemical degradation. No solvent is added.
